Marketing to your customers: community

Writer: Hillary MoullietHillary Moulliet

“There is immense power when a group of people with similar interests gets together to work toward the same goals.” – Idowu Koyenikan

My hope is that the work you do to serve your community, as a resident and a business owner, comes from the heart, and you find joy knowing you contribute to making your corner of the world a better place.

Of course, it's not always going to be butterflies and glitter and groups that work well together, but there's a lot to be proud of when you're committed to the work you do inside AND outside of your business.

I encourage you to step out of your studio's space and get to know who's around you. Volunteer. Serve. Form action groups. Find other business owners who have a similar vision for your community.

These connections often start as professional, and then turn into relationships as new friends working together. It may sound a bit kumbaya, but it's true. And it's needed for us as individuals and as business owners today more than ever.

Weaving your business into the fabric of your community is good for everyone.

Oh, and supporting your community is not all about donating gift cards*. Actually, it's not about gift cards at all.

* Gift cards: for your sanity, and to streamline donation requests, have an online system for accepting requests or simply choose a few organizations and donate to them exclusively. Gift cards can be a great fundraiser for an organization's silent auction, however, they often don't bring in a whole bunch of new business.

Some people think they are in community, but they are only in proximity. True community requires commitment and openness. It is a willingness to extend yourself to encounter and know the other.” –David Spangler

“It only takes one person to mobilize a community and inspire change. Even if you don't feel like you have it in you, it's in you. You have to believe in yourself. People will see your vision and passion and follow you.” – Teyonah Parris

“I suppose leadership at one time meant muscles; but today it means getting along with people.” – Mahatma Gandhi

And paraphrasing Tim Ferriss: the best way to meet the best people (and often important and well-connected people) is to volunteer.
